• Facial Fillers Explained

  • Are you considering Dermal (Facial) Fillers?
As we age facial wrinkles and creases begin to appear as our underlying collagen and elastin fibers begin to break down and wear out. Lines and wrinkles can also appear on your face due to environmental factors and from frowning, squinting, and smiling.

More and more women and men are seeking non-surgical solutions to add volume (fullness) to their face and decrease wrinkles. Perhaps you have heard of terms such as “liquid facelift” or “lunch time lift.” These procedures typically involve a cosmetic specialist injecting a variety of popular facial fillers such as, Restylane®, Perlane®,Juvederm™, Sculptra Aesthetic, or Radiesse®.

Whether for facial enhancement or rejuvenation to shape and contour the face, Dr. Curtis Perry’s first choice is fat transfer due to its natural feel and look, as well as its’ longevity. However, Dr. Perry does use facial fillers to accomplish a patient’s aesthetic goals. In a skilled practitioner’s hands these fillers are effectively in reducing wrinkles and adding fullness to the face.

    How do Facial Fillers work?
Basically all facial tissue fillers contain hyaluronic acids (HA) which restores lost volume, and help to stimulate the body’s collagen production. Since the dermal fillers contain natural occurring HA here’s little chance for an allergic reaction. It’s biodegradable, so your body will absorb it overtime.

The components of the more popular facial fillers are as follows:

Restylane® is a clear gel that contains a non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. HA naturally occurs in humans and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. Dr. Perry advises that Restylane® maintains its shape by using the body’s own moisture (water).

Juvéderm®, is an injectable hyaluronic acid filler that was created by Allergan, Inc.. the makers of BOTOX® Cosmetic. Juvéderm®, can reduce fine lines and wrinkles and add volume to the lips and skin.
Perlane® are dermal fillers that provide longer-lasting results. These dermal fillers are similar to Restylane® except that the gel particles are larger and are injected deeper into the skin. The injections are done with an ultra-fine needle. Dr. Perry’s lip enhancement patients notice that their lips have added volume and fine lines are diminished.

Radiesse® (formly called Radiance) is a synthetic dermal filler made of calcium hydroxylapatite. Radiesse® provides a structure into which the body’s own tissue can grow. The advantage of this product over collagen and other facial fillers, is the potential for long lasting effects.

Sculptra Aesthetic is a facial injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid, which helps to replace lost collagen. This product works over time to reinforce collagen structure to provide a firmer facial foundation and add fullness to shallow to deep facial wrinkles..
